It was when I was at college that I first read about a Digital Video Recorder. It was in a technology magazine, and I remember that it was going to get rid of all the cassettes for recordings. The new technology allowed you to record straight on to a hard drive.

This sounded a brilliant idea. I lost count of the number of times that I had to delete a previous recording because I had run out of space on my tapes to record anything else, and at least I would not have to keep buying new tapes.

The ad went on to say that you could even record programs on the hard drive when you were not even at home. You could automatically program the Digital Video recorder to do this, and the quality of the recorded picture was much better than on a tape cassette.

But like anything else this new, this technology came at a price. The first DVR units were selling for around $1000.00, and unfortunately this was a bit out of my price range; I had to wait a couple of years before the price finally dropped before I could afford to buy my first DVR.

But I must admit that was the only thing that did not impress me at the time; it was certainly a lot better than my Video Tape Recorder of the time.

As the popularity of the Digital Video Recorder grew, the DVR became even more advanced, and now you are able to record even more programs thanks to the bigger hard drives available.

It almost seems like an eternity ago when the DVR first came out, but it was not really that long ago. But like most of the other recent inventions, I can not imagine what life would have been like without it.

They are such a handy piece of equipment to have, and if anything goes wrong with your cable, at least you have a back up of programs to watch that are stored on your DVR.

Did you know that the first ever LED TV was a Sony? It’s true the Sony Qualia hit the streets in 2004 a fact that surprised me as I thought LED was far more recent.

The reason all of the technology companies were racing to introduce LED technology was simply that the color brightness and density is around twice as good as the traditional Cathode Ray lighting of TV sets. Plus there is a power saving by using a LED lit TV.

Local Dimming has been sold as a marvel of LED TV, and to be fair it is very clever. This is a feature of RGB Dynamic TVs. In simple terms this is where the black areas of the screen actually turn off to give you the blackest blacks possible and consequently amazing contrast. Most sets these days are RGB Dynamic. You can also get Edge-Lit and Full-Array sets. These offer a very slight lessening in picture quality (it’s hardly noticeable in all honesty) and are slightly better on power consumption.

Nowadays, Sony use the Bravia brand to front up their HD TV offerings and it is a brand that has grown in stature and sales “clout” massively over the past couple of years. So, bearing this in mind I thought I would take a look at what makes the Bravia LED TVs so popular among HD TV enthusiasts. Most Sony models are Edge-Lit or RGB by the way.

The smallest Bravia I could find is the 32 inch KDL32EX600. The set comes with an impressive array of features that you would associate with all of the bigger Sony sets and full 1080p HD. This makes the picture really clear and bright although Sony do not quote a refresh rate for the TV. I’m guessing 60 or 120 Hz, but to be honest at 1080p you probably don’t need any more. What makes this TV so attractive is a price of just over $700. In my opinion that is very good for a LED TV in terms of price.

Perfect for smaller viewing areas and maybe the bedroom this is one of Sony’s top sellers.

You can get a LED screen of any size up to 60 inches in the Sony Bravia range, so 40, 42, 45, 50, 52 and 55 inches as well. If you want to go top end, then you should seriously consider the new Sony XBR60LX900 60″ 3D TV. I’ve not had the pleasure of watching this new HD “beast”, but all the reviews suggest it works very well, is easy to use and produces one of the best LED pictures around. With extensive features, functionality and connectivity it is a bit pricey compared to other brands at around $4,500, but is clearly a quality offering. One thing I did like is integrated wi-fi, something the other manufacturers will now have to follow suit on and so they should!

The most popular screen size for any LED TV purchases seems to be the 46-52 inch range. My brother-in-law has just upsized to a 55 inch screen and personally I think it’s a bit overbearing for the viewing room size. We have a similar sized room and I think our 46 inch is just right. However, as far as the Bravia range is concerned if you were to push me for my favorite model, I’d have to say, for price versus performance, it would be the Sony Bravia EX700 52 Inch. Now at around $1,700-1,800 it is an advanced TV at a very reasonable price.

And that’s a great price, and you can pick up other really good deals if you’re prepared to dip into the Sony models that are pre 3D. I believe this is for two reasons, obviously the new 240Hz full 3D models are now in the shops and I also think the stores are still keen to sell as much as they can as the economic situation is still not good…so prices are keen.

A Sony has to be one of the best HD TV buys available. As far as quality and reliability go they are up there with the best and the same is true of picture quality and features.

To sum up, if you decide to go for a new LED TV or 3D then you will probably have to pay a certain premium over brands such as LG or Panasonic. Price wise Sony are on a par with Samsung who also make quality LED TVs. LG are catching up fast but will surely have to forego their price advantage to draw level in terms of technology and functionality.

If you’re old enough to remember IBM in its hey-day there was a saying in those heady 1970s days… “No-one ever got fired for buying IBM”. Buying a Sony LED TV is the same, you just won’t go wrong. They are up there amongst the best in all facets of modern HD TV.

I was into HD fairly early. My first set was an LG Plasma. When I first switched it on I couldn’t believe the difference over the older style TV sets. Colors were so much brighter, the picture so much crisper and the contrasts were amazing. However, it is now well documented that early Plasma TVs suffered from a few inherent problems.

The major problem was, of course, screen burn. When I switch on that old LG now, I can clearly see the frames for the sports news channel burned into the screen. It makes me smile! Light reflection was another issue and it did always just slightly annoy me that I could, when my eyes caught it, see the rear window reflected in the screen.

I was chatting to my brother-in-law before our recent festive trip to Vancouver and I was hugely surprised when he revealed he’d gone out and brought a 54 Inch Panasonic Viera Plasma! I couldn’t wait to see what it was like!

I just couldn’t understand why he had gone Plasma with the price of LEDs dropping all the time. LED performance is accepted as the best and I was all too aware of the inherent Plasma problems. And, there isn’t the 3D option with Plasma. I was also a little worried that he’d gone too big on screen given the size of his viewing area.

We arrived late in the evening so only got to actually see the monster on our first night rather than view…it looked big! But I needn’t have worried once we fired it up the the next evening. We watched Inception via Blu-Ray and the TCP54G25 put in a stunning performance (I’m pleased to say). Inception is a great movie for highlighting the best points of an HD TV anyway. But, I have to say, I was very impressed at how the set handled the movie in all aspects.

This set incorporates Panasonic’s new “NeoPDP” technology, and the sales puff will tell you this is what is responsible for the amazing clarity, definition and contrast. It also says that the “600Hz resolution sub drive” offers great high motion clarity. This is true and full 1080p HD definitely helps as well. And, having now watched the TCP54G25 in action, I reckon it’s the best non-LED HD picture I’ve seen, and that is saying something!

I was also a bit worried that I’d notice a degree of picture degradation watching so close to such a big screen. However the set performed superbly well with a crisp and clear picture, even when the action was break-neck followed by stills (Inception has a few scenes like this). And the colors were bright with deep contrast.

Panasonic also tell you that this set has one of the longest Plasma screen lives. I think they quote 100,000 hours of viewing at 8 hours a day before the panel brightness has decreased by half. On my estimation that’s 30 years of viewing before you need to replace. To be fair my first Plasma is now in the spare room and at five years old is starting to show the strain. But it has had a lot of use.

On hearing those figures I did a bit of research and found out that Panasonic recently brought Pioneer’s advanced Plasma technology. That new technology is in this model. Certainly the tech boasts are backed up by the performance I saw, only time will tell on screen life.

The TV itself is feature rich boasting features you normally see on much more expensive sets. It has the ability to play online content via a direct ethernet link. As with most HD sets if you want wi-fi you need to buy a separate adapter. This has become a bit of a bug bear of mine as I really think an HD set should include integral wi-fi!

However you do get the advanced picture technology, the infinite black technology, THX mode, Viera Link (which allows you to interlink attached devices) and an outstanding game mode. The nephews are BIG gamers (they have every console) and I have to say watching their latest addiction (one of the Halo games) it boasts one of the best game modes I have seen. They were also playing a hilarious skateboard game and it really was stomach churning watching some of more outrageous moves.

The connectivity on this set is basic, indeed there are only 3 HDMI ports, when 4 seems to be the norm on most sets today. Panasonic argue that Viera Link ensures 3 is all you need!

During our stay in Vancouver Graham’s new Panasonic 54 Inch Plasma provided us with plenty of great entertainment. After all those winter nights up there are so dark and wet! Coupled with some nice red wine (so very expensive in BC) my preconceived prejudices were blown away.

I really wouldn’t have thought of going out and buying a big screen plasma until I saw this one in action. But, watching the TCP54G25 it has definitely made me think again on this, especially so given the mid range price. If you can afford to go LED all well and good, but for the price you pay for a Plasma such as this, the price v performance gap is definitely much more marginal nowadays.
